Rapunzel (2010)
Why the hell is this movie originally called Tangled? Is this because it’s the European name of the original fairy tail. Is everything from abroad squeezed into the American form. This is just sad, very sad! I went to the cinema to watch this one with my two oldest daughters who were awestruck, of course, by the animation. It has all the elements that make up a (not to say nearly every) Disney animation: a female victim which is stronger than she appears and a princess of course, a male hero with a soft spot, a funny animal (sidekick) and evil witch. I think it will always be this way, because this will always have the greatest appeal to the intended audience. One of my best Disney animations is Atlantis though, this has a bit more mature feel to it.
Sniper (1993)
OH GOD PLEASE DON’T MAKE ME WATCH PT. 2! PLEASE!
Watching this movie is pure torture! It’s extremely slow, doesn’t tell any kind of story. Is neither action, drama nor thriller. And it has the lamest SFX ever. While the technical quality of the movie tells us, there was some money available to make an actual movie instead of this pile of crap.
Coraline (2009)
This is one amazing stop-motion animation. The story is new, refreshing and nicely dark although the end is a bit too warm and fuzzy for my likes. It’s a bit too scary for my kids, which is really a shame, because I’d very much like to show them this beautiful movie.
True Lies (1994)
Brings back memories. It’s not a really great movie, but it sure is enjoyable if you watch it once in a while. Jamie Lee Curtis has some really nice legs and firm butt. It’s a bit of the Mr. & Mrs. Smit of the nineties.
Crazy Guy With Super Kung Fu (1979)
Dead Eye, Dead High or Red Eye; the main character. This is the first time I’ve seen some gay kung-fu action.
Magnificent Warriors (1987)
A sort of half baked Indiana Jones clone with Chinese/Japanese actors. It’s funny, but a dime a dozen. Only watch if you want to see a movie that totally fails to convey some kind of political message.
Swamp Thing (1982)
Men in rubber suits! Sword fighting crocodile mutants! This is truely a classic movie. Must-have(-seen). It’s more a romantic story about the love between a scientist and a tormented monster (the mutated scientist) and the laughable battle with the bad guys.
Swamp Zombies (2005)
Boobies! During a way too long showerscene. This is a bad ut enjoyable movie. The best part is when the hero cum karate expert out of the blue kicks an injured kid from the group because of his moaning (before he discoveres the kid has become a zombie but already knows he’s injured) and then tells the rest of the group of youngsters the kid is badly injured. Rofl! Just out of the blue.
Dune (1984)
Love the book. But the movie is bad, horrible. Bad, bad, bad, bad. Worse. Disastrous! Totally rapes the original book/story anally, three times over. And then some. The translation of the weirding way from book to movie is really, utterly stupid; a (projectile, mind you) weapon based on one’s voice, come on! In the book, the Weirding way is some kind of kung-fu extraordinaire. Something TOTALLY different.
I can admire the effort to somehow show the characters thoughts, even when this too, totally fails. If you haven’t read the book, you won’t understand the movie, at all. If you’ve read the book, it’ll leave you flabbergasted and in desperate need of a reread.
Re-cycle (2007)
This one is three types of movie in one go; it start out like somekind of Jap-horror like The Ring, then it turns into a fantasy horror, taking place in a world of, literal, make believe and then ends like a Jpop, concluding with a very, very unusual moral of the story. The combination between genre and moral provide this with a huge WTF class indication.
Paprika (2006)
Before Inception, there was Paprika. An anima about dreaming, dreams and getting a bit too caught up in them. A very entertaining and trippy movie. There’s too much too see during the dream sequences and you really have to pay attention to get the story. A keeper!
Robogeisha (2009)
Lol, this is one bad motherfucker. Not bad as in evil, but bad as in crappy quality, crappy (digital) animations, crappy acting, whatever. Although it’s a fun flick to watch, this recend trend in J-sploitation in not bringing much good. There’s no love or passion behind this movie. It’s just a vessel for carrying the director’s strange and incoherent fantasies.
It’s a keeper, but I won’t be diving too deep into this genre.
Tokyo Gore Police (2008)
See ‘Robogeisha’.
X-men, The Last Stand (2006)
I like the X-men series and of course I like Wolverine best. This is not the greatest movie in the series. It’s a bit lame to be honest. It tries to pack too many dilemma’s into a single movie, it’s intended audience is the more accepting teenager and has a lot of unsatisfying improbabilities.
I’d like to see a new X-men movie taking a turn for the darker side, just as was done with Batman in The Dark Knight.
