We Can Make Each Other Happy

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

We can. Really.

I was made happy by listening to ‘We Can Make Each Other Happy’ by FortyOne (who else). At first I was scared this was just a collection of default mixing tricks often applied by FortyOne, but my prejudice quickly proved wrong. The mixing is minimal; the most of the original songs is left untouched and just some extras are added. This left me listening harder to find out what exactly was added and what was original. This makes this release some kind of audio puzzle (especially for those not familiar with the original tracks)

Fortyone – Late Winter

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Very nice, very nice. Intended for release on cassette (you know, the magnetic ones) I got the limited cd special advance copy (7/7) edition. H00t :). And it’s very nice indeed. Every track is mixed with skill. None (or hardly any) of the regular mix tricks often used by 41 (at least, as I tend to see it). The entire cd, or cassette is a balanced collection of plunderphonics with some experimental tracks that offer a pleasant variant.

And as always, at least on the cd, there’s a great bonus track with some heavy beats.

You can find more music and a lot of freebies on 41′s website or MySpace.

Hello, My Name Is Instrumental

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Everything is mixed up on this album, even the quality is mixed. The cd doesn’t start with it’s best song, but the quality rapidly increases until it reaches it’s top with number 9, The Sugafoot Rag (listen below). It’s a pity that a lot of the tracks do not seem to be heading somewhere, they verge dangerously on the edge o being bland and uninspired. The other half is much better, but only the Sugarfoor Rag really stands out.

Smaller Portions

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Expecting music, this time I got music, joy! I started to listen to the CD for the 5th time, every previous, unsuccesfull attempt was interrupted by our newborn. But now, Smaller Portions by Fortyone (fluv005), is (still) playing.

The CD is a bit of a ‘slow’ starter; the tracks get better as they get longer. In fact, in general; the longer the track, the better the song. As if the shorter bits are tiny experiments where it just didn’t get past the ‘these-five-second-really-match’ state.

Strawberry Jam

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

Expecting music, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the cd contains a collection of stories, fairy tales, cleverly put together from a multitude of soundbites from a very wide variaty of sources. My imagination was pleasantly sparked upon hearing soundbites from commercials. cartoons and tv-shows from different times (50/60′s – till now) especially with Jewish Easter (Yes I’ll swallow) and the 3 interviews with a mental patient.
